The specimen in the photograph is the Smithsonian’s oldest mounted fossil skeleton, first displayed in 1872. King Charles II of England had a set mounted on the walls of Hampton Court Palace, where they remain, and the skulls and antlers of Irish elk still adorn the walls of castles and lodges in Ireland today. Kings and nobles prized the giant antlers. Humans forgot all about this giant deer until the late 1500s and early 1600s, when Irish peasants, digging in bogs for peat to burn as fuel, started finding their fossilized remains. “It’s possible, but unproven, that hunting finished off the already doomed populations.” “In both places-Western Europe and Russia-Neolithic humans were showing up at the time of extinction,” says Lister. giganteus survived until roughly 8,000 years ago, when warming temperatures turned the semi-open country favored by the deer into dense forest. Worman and Tristan Kimbrell, who said the “ability to produce and nurse living young is strongly tied to the female’s nutritional status.” As landscapes turned to ice and tundra, herd sizes would have been reduced until the animals dwindled away. But the cold spell’s impact on females may have been the deciding factor, according to a 2008 study by C.O. “The males would have really struggled, having to grow those antlers every year,” says Lister. The giant deer required abundant, mineral-rich grasses, leaves and shoots, and such vegetation went into drastic decline as temperatures rapidly cooled. The animals died out in Western Europe during a time of rapid cooling known as the Younger Dryas, which lasted from roughly 13,000 to 12,000 years ago. Lister’s mapping, dating and pollen research show that the problem was climate change. Proponents thought the Irish elk’s antlers got too big and heavy, causing males to get tangled in trees and sink into bogs and lakes. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Irish elk was the textbook example of orthogenesis, the now-discredited theory that evolution proceeded in straight lines that could not be stopped, even when they led to disaster. Rex and the mammoth, yet relatively little was known about it, and much of that was wrong,” he says. “It was one of the most celebrated extinct animals, up there with T. The evolution of its most striking feature was driven by sexual selection no survival advantages derived from such enormous antlers. Nor was it an elk it was a giant deer, with no relation to the European elk ( Alces alces) or North American elk ( Cervus canadensis). The animal thrived in Ireland but was not exclusively Irish, ranging across Europe to western Siberia for some 400,000 years during the Pleistocene. The females were 10 to 15 percent shorter than the males, without antlers.Īs a name, Irish elk is a double misnomer. The biggest males weighed 1,500 pounds, about the same as an Alaskan moose, and they sported the largest antlers the world has ever known-12 feet across, weighing almost 90 pounds. Today we call it the Irish elk, or Megaloceros giganteus. To modern eyes, it looks like an exaggeration or a parody, but it was an accurate representation of an animal that early Europeans knew well. Some 17,000 years ago, on a wall of Lascaux cave in southwestern France, an artist made a painting of a deer with fantastically elongated antlers.

In typical Marian fashion she fought hard for just over a year, overcoming the Whipple surgery, chemo and radiation. Sadly, she was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in June of 2022. She planned on travelling to Europe with Brian to see the Pope, which was cancelled twice due to covid and then her cancer diagnosis – which happened shortly after her retirement and celebrating 45 years of marriage. Marian’s main focus was getting to retirement and having a small pension, while looking forward to spending time watching her grandkids grow up. She enjoyed hosting Christmas and Easter dinners that were always bursting with so many plates, including her classic dishes of cheesy macaroni, meatballs, and of course the traditional perogies and cabbage rolls, always with a side of at least three types of salads. She always made sure everyone around her was fed, watered, or just listened to. Gerards, running errands, or just visiting in the afternoons. She especially loved caring for her 97-year-old mother Sophie – talking to her twice a day – and attending mass at St. Marian was best known for taking care of others. Her favourite grandchildren's past time was being on the boat fishing, hitting the sand dunes at Good Spirit, or ice fishing. Marian cherished watching them play in many hockey and baseball games, track and field, Tae Kwon Do, kayaking, or just playing at the beach. Her family trips continued, including a recent winter ski trip to Fernie with her four grandchildren. Marian enjoyed traveling with Brian to her favourite places many times: Hawaii, Palm Springs, and doing the Panama Canal on a cruise. Many of whom have recently reached out about how they loved seeing Marian and felt like she was part of their family when they came to the doctor's office. She was so proud and honoured to settle in at the Doctors office, eventually named Sunrise Health and Wellness Centre, where she flourished taking care of all “her patients” and building so many great friendships. Once the kids grew up a little bit, she worked hard at her passion of helping others and getting into the medical reception field as a Clinic Assistant. Marian worked many jobs while raising her two children. She enjoyed many years in the neighbourhood with many friends and having her parents a couple blocks away. They eventually settled in Yorkton on Henderson Drive, where they raised their two children, Melissa and Clint. On June 25, 1977, Marian married her soulmate, Brian Belitsky at St. In her youth she helped on the family farm growing up with her three siblings. She attended grade school in Buchanan and eventually graduating in Yorkton. She grew up on the family farm north of Buchanan in the Olesha Church district. Students will spend a lot of time working on word recognition. Once students have received your direction instruction (“ I do“) and had plenty of opportunities to practice their heart words with you (“ We do“),they need time to practice and apply these skills on their own (“ You do“). The irregular part of the word is the part they must “learn by heart”, thus the name Heart Words. You explicitly teach them the sounds that are irregular in the word. The Heart Word Method requires students to use their phoneme knowledge to map the regular part of the words. Instead, integrate irregularly spelled, high-frequency words into your phonics lessons using the Heart Word Method. This means you must stop expecting students to learn sight words through flashcards and rote memorization. The Science of Reading tells us that effective instruction follows the “ I do, We do, You do” model. What is the best way to teach sight words? Secondly, knowing sight words is a huge confidence booster for students! The player can go through it to find the needed cards to build a pile sequence or to build up the foundations. The Stock pile contains the remaining cards not displayed in the tableau. An empty space in the tableau may only be filled with Kings. Only the upper cards on each pile can be moved to the foundations. The player can do this in two ways: by moving the cards directly to the foundation when the sequence allows it or by transferring the cards to other piles in a sequence of alternating colors and descending order (from King to Ace).įull or partial sequences are moveable within the piles. The player must move the upper cards to reveal the ones immediately below them. Only the upper card of each is revealed, with the others facing down. On the tableau, there are 7 piles of cards. The foundations are built in a set order, starting with the Aces and ending with the Kings. The goal is to move all the cards in the tableau to the four foundations (1 per suite). In a game of Solitaire Klondike, the tableau is divided into 4 main areas: the Piles, the Stock, the Waste (discarded cards from the Stock), and the Foundations. Regardless of its birthplace, the most well-known version of the game, Klondike, is said to have appeared by the end of the 19th century in Canada, in the gold rush region of Klondike. The origins of Solitaire are still a source of debate among historians with many pointing to 19th century France and Germany while others believe its emergence is linked to the spread of the art of divination in Eastern Europe. It is also possible for more players to engage in the game with each taking turns making a move or through a competition to find who can solve the tableau more efficiently. Despite its many variants depending on the disposition of the cards on the tableau, the goal is always to organize and collect the cards in a set order in as few moves as possible and in the quickest time. Solitaire, also known as Patience in many countries, is a single-player card game. The Klondike by Threes is the difficult mode of the game, as it prevents the players from using all the cards in the Stock pile in one go. The Solitaire Klondike itself has two game modes, depending on how the cards on the Stock pile are dealt: This is the game that became so widespread thanks to its inclusion in Windows 3.0 back in 1990 and that has since turned into a symbol of procrastination at work, thanks to its popularity among office workers. Nevertheless, whenever Solitaire is mentioned everyone immediately thinks about one variant: the Klondike. There are several variants included in this category, some of which share nothing with the others except for the use of cards to play them. In reality, the name Solitaire does not refer to a specific game. Young and old alike can appreciate the peacefulness this game provides, so suitable when it comes to clearing their minds and winding down in a moment of stress.
